About The Sisters Love

Ahead of their time is a much used phrase to describe some of the most creative groups and The Sisters Love were most definitely that. In 1980 New York DJ Danny Krivit released an extended eight-minute cut-up of a track called "Give Me Your Love" by The Sisters Love. Already an underground disco classic (partly on account of its rarity), this release brought it to a new audience of disco and rare groove fans. Twenty years on and Soul Jazz Records are bringing together an amazing collection of soul/funk/early disco cuts from this cult group who only ever released singles (on Motown and A&M), the scarcity of which has made some of them £100 records! The track "Give Me Your Love" originally came out in 1973 and subsequently become the property of the New York underground disco cognoscenti of DJs David Mancuso, Nicky Siano, Walter Gibbons and Larry Levan et all who made it a regular party anthem. The Sisters Love worked with producers such as Willie Hutch, Leon Ware, Gloria Jones and Richard Evans, toured the world with The Jackson Five, and appear in the Blaxploitation movie The Mack. They made some classic music previously only available to the cognescenti and this release makes available many rare tracks as well as bringing the music to a new audience.

About The Meters

The Meters were an American funk band based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Meters performed and recorded their music from the late 1960s until 1977. While the band never enjoyed significant mainstream success, they are considered one of the progenitors of funk music, and their work influenced many other bands, both contemporary to their work, and after their heyday.

Art Neville, the group's frontman, launched a solo career around the New Orleans area in the mid-1950s, while still in high school. The Meters formed in 1965, with a line-up that included keyboardist and vocalist Art Neville, guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste later joined by percussionist/vocalist Cyril Neville. They became the house band for Allen Toussaint and his record label, Sansu Enterprises.

In 1969, the Meters released "Sophisticated Cissy" and "Cissy Strut", both major R&B chart hits. "Look-Ka Py Py" and "Chicken Strut" were also hits the following year. After a label shift in 1972, the Meters had difficulty returning to the charts, but they played on several important records, working with Dr. John, Ernie K. Doe, Paul McCartney, King Biscuit Boy, Labelle and Robert Palmer, among others.

In 1974 Paul McCartney invited the Meters to play at the release party for his Venus and Mars album aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones was in attendance at the event, and he was greatly taken with The Meters and their sound. The Rolling Stones invited the Meters to open for them on their Tour of America in 1975. That same year, the Meters recorded one of their most beloved and successful albums, Fire On The Bayou. From 1976-77 they played in The Wild Tchoupitoulas with George & Amos Landry and the Neville Brothers. The band broke up in 1977. Toussaint claimed the rights to the name "The Meters", so they played under various other names and in various combinations for the rest of the decade.

They appeared on Saturday Night Live on March 19, 1977.

Ike Wister Turner (November 5, 1931 – December 12, 2007) was an American musician, bandleader, talent scout, and record producer. His first recording, "Rocket 88" by "Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats," in 1951, is considered by some to be the "first rock and roll song" ever. However, he is best known for his work with his ex-wife Tina Turner as one half of the Ike & Tina Turner revue. Spanning a career that lasted half a century, Ike's repertoire included blues, soul, rock, and funk. Alongside his former wife, he was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and in 2001 was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Turner won two Grammy Awards.

Don't Pity Me - Joanie Sommers

At age ten, Sommers sang Your Cheating Heart on a Buffalo television show and won a prize for her performance. The family moved to California when she was 14. As a student at Venice High School in Los Angeles, she sang at school dances. By the time she was 18, she appeared on the television series 77 Sunset Strip and sang a duet with Edd Byrnes (Kookie's Love Song) and on a solo album (Positively the Most!).

Sommers was a popular singer during the 1960s. In 1962, she reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the single Johnny Get Angry, released on Warner Bros. Records. (Will Ryan wrote and produced a sequel song, Johnny Got Angry, for Sommers during the 1990s.) She also charted with One Boy from the musical Bye Bye Birdie, which reached #54 in 1960, and When the Boys Get Together, a #94 single in 1962. She appeared on numerous television shows as a singer and as an actress, and acted in two films: Everything's Ducky (1961) and The Lively Set (1964).

Sommers was a game show contestant during the 1960s on such shows as Everybody's Talking, Hollywood Squares, You Don't Say, and The Match Game, as well as Dick Clark's, Where the Action Is.

In the early 1960s, she sang It's Pepsi, For Those Who Think Young in commercials, and she came to be referred to as "The Pepsi Girl". Years later, uncredited, she sang Now You See It, Now You Don't, Oh, Diet Pepsi for the sugar-free companion product.

Her 1965 track, Don't Pity Me (Warner Bros. 5629 - Don't Pity Me / My Block), became a huge Northern Soul hit in the UK and still fills the dance floors whenever played.

In the early 1970s, she withdrew from the music scene in favor of a family life. She began making public appearances again during the 1980s, including two appearances on KCRW's satirical radio program, The Cool & the Crazy, hosted by Art Fraud (Ronn Spencer) and Vic Tripp (Gene Sculatti).

Leonard bought a stake in a record company called Aristocrat Records in 1947; in 1950 Leonard brought his brother Phil into the operation and they became sole owners of the company and renamed it Chess Records. In 1952 the brothers started Checker Records, as an alternative label for radio play (radio stations would only play a limited number of records for any one imprint). In December 1956 they launched a jazz label called Marterry, which was quickly renamed Argo Records. Argo changed its name in 1965 to Cadet Records to end confusion with an older British classical music label named Argo. There was also Cadet Concept records, for rock and more adventurous music, such as the Rotary Connection, and the now-infamous experimental psychedelic Electric Mud album by Muddy Waters.

During the 1950s, Leonard and Phil Chess handled most of the production. They brought in legendary producer Ralph Bass in 1960 to handle the gospel and some of the blues singers. Bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon was also heavily involved in production for the label, and is now credited retroactively as a producer on some re-releases. During the 1960s, the Chess' A&R man and chief producer was Roquel "Billy" Davis.

Chess Records was also known for such session musicians as drummer Maurice White and Bassist/Trombonist Louis Satterfield, both of whom would later shape the funk group Earth, Wind, & Fire.

The company was also briefly run by Marshall Chess, son of Leonard, in his position as vice president between January and October, 1969, and as president following the acquisition by GRT at that time, before he went on to found Rolling Stones Records.

In 1969 the Chess brothers sold the label to General Recorded Tape (GRT) for $6.5 million. In October 1969 Leonard Chess died, and by 1972 the only part of Chess Records still operating in Chicago was the recording studio. GRT had moved the label to New York City, operating it as a division of Janus Records. Under GRT, Chess effectively vanished as an important force in the recording industry. In August 1975, GRT sold what remained of Chess Records to All Platinum Records. In the early eighties, noticing the unavailability of the Chess catalog, Marshall Chess was able to convince The Robinson family, who owned All Platinum, to reissue the catalog themselves under his supervision (All Platinum had been licensing selected tracks out to other companies). The reissued singles and LPs sold well, but by the mid eighties All Platinum fell into financial difficulties, and the Chess master recordings were eventually acquired by MCA Records, which itself was in turn later merged into Universal Music imprint Geffen Records. In the 2000s Universal's limited-edition reissue label, Hip-O Select, began releasing a series of comprehensive box sets devoted to such Chess artists as Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry.

Chess Records appears to be the subject of two films to be released in 2008, Cadillac Records and Who Do You Love. In addition to the Chess brothers, both films feature portrayals of or based on Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Chuck Berry, and Etta James. Cadillac Records was directed by Darnell Martin and features an ensemble cast including Adrien Brody, Beyoncé Knowles and Jeffrey Wright. Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis, Jr. (born May 27, 1935) is an American jazz icon, composer, pianist and radio personality. He has been referred to as "the great performer", a title reflecting his performance style and musical selections which display his early gospel playing and classical training (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, etc.) along with his love of jazz and other musical forms. Ramsey Lewis has recorded over 80 albums and has received five gold records and three Grammy Awards so far in his career.

Ramsey Lewis was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Ramsey Lewis, Sr. and Pauline Lewis. Lewis began taking piano lessons at the age of four. At 15 he joined his first jazz band, The Cleffs. The seven-piece group provided Lewis his first involvement with jazz; he would later join Cleffs drummer Isaac "Redd" Holt and bassist Eldee Young to form the Ramsey Lewis Trio.

The trio started as primarily a jazz unit and released their first album, Ramsey Lewis And The Gentlemen of Swing, in 1956. Following their 1965 hit The In Crowd (the single reached #5 on the pop charts, and the album #2) they concentrated more on pop material. Young and Holt left in 1966 to form the Young-Holt Trio and were replaced by Cleveland Eaton and Maurice White. White was replaced by Maurice Jennings in 1970. Later, Franky Donaldson and Billy "The Bhudda" Dickens replaced Jennings and Eaton; Felton Crews also appeared on many 1980's releases.

By 1966, Lewis was one of the nation’s most successful jazz pianists, topping the charts with The In Crowd, Hang On Sloopy, and Wade in the Water. Many of his recordings attracted a large non-jazz audience. In the '70s, Lewis often played electric piano, although by later in the decade he was sticking to acoustic and using an additional keyboardist in his groups.

In addition to recording and performing, Lewis hosted a morning show on Chicago "smooth jazz" radio station WNUA (95.5 FM) until May 22, 2009. His weekly syndicated radio program "Legends of Jazz," created in 1990, features recordings from artists such as David Sanborn, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Kurt Elling, Al Jarreau and Miles Davis. The show can be heard in 60 U.S. cities and overseas. On December 4, 2006, the Ramsey Lewis Morning Show became part of Broadcast Architecture's Smooth Jazz Network, simulcasting on other Smooth Jazz stations across the country for the first time. However, the show is still based in Chicago.

In 2006, a well-received 13-episode Legends of Jazz television series hosted by Lewis was broadcast on public TV nationwide and featured live performances by a variety of jazz artists including Larry Gray, Lonnie Smith, Joey Defrancesco, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Kurt Elling, Benny Golson, Pat Metheny and Tony Bennett.

Lewis is artistic director of Jazz at Ravinia (an annual feature at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois) and helped organize Ravinia's Jazz Mentor Program. Ramsey also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Merit School of Music, a Chicago inner-city music program. Early in 2005, the Ramsey Lewis Foundation was created to help connect at-risk children to the world of music. As an offshoot of that foundation, Lewis plans to form a Youth Choir and Youth Orchestra. In January 2007, the Dave Brubeck Institute invited Lewis to join its Honorary Board of Friends at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Lewis is an Honorary Board member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra.

Lewis still lives in Chicago, Illinois, the city of his musical roots. He has seven children, fourteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Chess Records appears to be the subject of two films to be released in 2008, Cadillac Records and Who Do You Love. In addition to the Chess brothers, both films feature portrayals of or based on Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Chuck Berry, and Etta James. Cadillac Records was directed by Darnell Martin and features an ensemble cast including Adrien Brody, Beyoncé Knowles and Jeffrey Wright. Who Do You Love was directed by Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks and stars Alessandro Nivola playing Leonard Chess "as a complicated, driven man, hard on both his musicians and his family, yet with a real love for some of America's greatest music." The latter film's world premiere was at the Toronto International Film Festival, September 11, 2008.

Betty Wright (born December 21, 1953) (not to be mistaken for the late wife of famed gospel singer, the late Rev. Timothy Wright) is a Miami-based soul and R&B singer, who influenced a generation of female singer-songwriters and has also influenced the world of hip hop, which has sampled some of her more famous material.

From singing gospel with the family group, the Echoes of Joy, Wright began switching to R&B music in 1965 when she was only eleven years old. In 1967, she discovered singers George and Gwen McCrae, and helped them sign to Henry Stone's Alston record label. In 1968, she released her first album, My First Time Around, at the age of 15, and scored her first hit single, "Girls Can't Do What Guys Can Do". on Alston, part of Stone's TK studio and record company in Florida. But it was not until the end of 1971 that the most successful phase of her career took place.

The song, "Clean Up Woman", became a major pop and R&B hit, remaining at #2 for eight weeks on the R&B chart and reaching #6 on the pop listing. "Clean Up Woman" was written by Steve Alaimo and stayed for 14 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It sold over a million copies with the R.I.A.A. gold disc award on 30 December 1971 and would later influence a remix of Mary J. Blige's "Real Love" single with the sample of its guitar riffs; R&B girl trio SWV's "I'm So Into You" also featured a sample from "Clean Up Woman," as did Afrika Bambaataa's song "Zulu War Chant", and Sublime's "Get Out!" remix. Beyoncé has sampled "Girls Can't Do What The Guys Do" for her hit "Upgrade U".

In 1978, Wright scored with a re-worked live version of a song she had written with producer Willie Clarke, "Tonight is the Night" (about a real-life love affair that happened with Wright when she was a teenager). The original version had done reasonably well three years earlier but the new, much longer version climbed to #11 R&B. This was later sampled by both Candyman for his one-hit wonder "Knockin' Boots" and Sheek Louch's single, "Good Love" . Another single, "Where is the Love" won her a Grammy for Best R&B Song in 1975.

In 1978, Wright sang a duet, "No Tricks", with Alice Cooper. In late 1979, she appeared as a special guest on most Survival Tour concerts of reggae superstar Bob Marley.

After experiencing a brief slump in the early 1980s, she rebounded to set up her own record label, Ms. B Records, and in 1988 made music history by being the first woman to have a gold record on her own label, with the release of Mother Wit, which featured two of her biggest hits in years, "No Pain No Gain" and "After The Pain." On both songs, Wright displays her upper register capabilities and her ability to sing in the seventh octave. Wright also charted in a 1990 duet with Grayson Hugh on a remake of the 1981 Champaign hit "How 'Bout Us", and sang on fellow Miami vocalist Gloria Estefan's 1991 chart-topper "Coming Out of the Dark."

When R&B group Color Me Badd released their hit, "I Wanna Sex You Up", in 1991, it generated controversy because the sample from "Tonight is The Night" had not been cleared; Wright soon took the band to court for royalties and was awarded 35% percent of royalties for writing the song. DJ Quik used a sample of "Tonight is The Night" on his first single " Tonite".

Her cover of the song, "Shoorah! Shoorah!", which she recorded in 1974, was used in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. The song, which was written by Allen Toussaint and first recorded by Frankie Miller, also appears on the soundtrack to the second series of the UK Channel 4 comedy drama, No Angels.

By 2001, a compilation album The Very Best of Betty Wright was released, along with her first studio album for several years, Fit for a King.. In 2002, the underground Hip-Hop artist RJD2 used a sample from Wright's song "Secretary" in his most commercially successful track "Ghostwriter". "Ghostwriter" has since gone on to be used in multiple advertisements and commercials.

On 24 December 2005, her 21-year-old son Patrick Parker was shot and killed after a dispute at a Christmas party in Opa-locka, a Miami suburb.

In 2006, Wright appeared on the TV show Making the Band as vocal coach appointed by Sean Combs, for new female group Danity Kane. Still recording music to this day, she now mentors several young singers and has done vocal production for the likes of Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez and Joss Stone. Wright currently resides in her hometown of Miami.

About Chess Records

Chess Records was an American record label based in Chicago, Illinois. It specialized in blues, R&B, gospel music, early rock and roll, and occasional jazz releases.

Run by brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, the company produced and released many important singles and albums, which are now regarded as central to the rock music canon. Musician and critic Cub Koda described Chess Records as "America's greatest blues label."

Chess Records was based at several different locations on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, the most famous being at 2120 S. Michigan Avenue from c. 1956 to c. 1965, immortalized by British rock group The Rolling Stones in their song "2120 South Michigan Avenue", which was an instrumental recorded at that address during their first U.S. tour in 1964. The Rolling Stones would record at Chess Studios two more times. This building is now home to Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven Foundation.

Leonard bought a stake in a record company called Aristocrat Records in 1947; in 1950 Leonard brought his brother Phil into the operation and they became sole owners of the company and renamed it Chess Records. In 1952 the brothers started Checker Records, as an alternative label for radio play (radio stations would only play a limited number of records for any one imprint). In December 1956 they launched a jazz label called Marterry, which was quickly renamed Argo Records. Argo changed its name in 1965 to Cadet Records to end confusion with an older British classical music label named Argo. There was also Cadet Concept records, for rock and more adventurous music, such as the Rotary Connection, and the now-infamous experimental psychedelic Electric Mud album by Muddy Waters.

During the 1950s, Leonard and Phil Chess handled most of the production. They brought in legendary producer Ralph Bass in 1960 to handle the gospel and some of the blues singers. Bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon was also heavily involved in production for the label, and is now credited retroactively as a producer on some re-releases. During the 1960s, the Chess' A&R man and chief producer was Roquel "Billy" Davis.

Chess Records was also known for such session musicians as drummer Maurice White and Bassist/Trombonist Louis Satterfield, both of whom would later shape the funk group Earth, Wind, & Fire.

The company was also briefly run by Marshall Chess, son of Leonard, in his position as vice president between January and October, 1969, and as president following the acquisition by GRT at that time, before he went on to found Rolling Stones Records.

In 1969 the Chess brothers sold the label to General Recorded Tape (GRT) for $6.5 million. In October 1969 Leonard Chess died, and by 1972 the only part of Chess Records still operating in Chicago was the recording studio. GRT had moved the label to New York City, operating it as a division of Janus Records. Under GRT, Chess effectively vanished as an important force in the recording industry. In August 1975, GRT sold what remained of Chess Records to All Platinum Records. In the early eighties, noticing the unavailability of the Chess catalog, Marshall Chess was able to convince The Robinson family, who owned All Platinum, to reissue the catalog themselves under his supervision (All Platinum had been licensing selected tracks out to other companies). The reissued singles and LPs sold well, but by the mid eighties All Platinum fell into financial difficulties, and the Chess master recordings were eventually acquired by MCA Records, which itself was in turn later merged into Universal Music imprint Geffen Records. Oscar Brown, Jr (October 10, 1926 – May 29, 2005) was a singer, songwriter, playwright, poet, and civil rights activist. He ran for office in the Illinois state legislature and U.S. Congress, both unsuccessfully.

Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, he was named for his father Oscar Brown, Sr., who was a successful attorney and real estate broker. His singing debut was on the radio show Secret City at age fifteen. Brown attended Englewood High School in Chicago, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) but did not obtain a degree. He served a stint in the U.S. Army, officially segregated until 1948, where his views on "race relations" were considered "subversive." In his youth, he was even a member of the Communist Party, USA, which ultimately also decided Oscar was "too subversive"; he was suspected to be a Black Nationalist.

He founded The Oscar Brown, Jr. H.I.P. Legacy Foundation to carry on his work. But his first attempt at mounting a major musical stage show in New York City was "Kicks & Co.," c. 1960. Host Dave Garroway turned over an entire broadcast of the "Today" show to Brown to perform numbers from the show and try to raise the necessary funds to launch it on the stage. As with virtually all of Brown's theatrical endeavors, the public was not won over sufficiently to allow financial breakeven despite acclaim by some critics. (His longest-running relative success, thanks to participation by Muhammad Ali, was "Big-Time Buck White.") "Kicks & Co." is set on an all-African-American college campus in the south, during the early days of attempted desegregation. The character Mr. Kicks is an emissary of Satan sent to try to derail these efforts, in which the play's protagonist, Ernest Black, has become involved. Another notable musical show, "Joy," saw two incarnations-1966 and 1969-and again addressed social issues of the time. Appearing with Oscar were his wife, Jean Pace, and the Brazilian singer/accordionist Sivuca. RCA released the original cast recording around 1970.

Brown wrote at least 1,000 songs (only 125 have been published), twelve albums, and over a dozen musical plays. The Quantic Soul Orchestra is a live band project of musician and DJ, Will Holland. Holland has recorded under several names, most notably Quantic). The band's lineup changes from album to album, with sometime members including Holland's sister, saxophonist Lucy Holland, his Limp Twins collaborator Russ Porter and Hardkandy member Simon Little. Will Holland plays guitar and bass, and performs some of the percussion. Their music focuses on reviving a dusty funk and jazz sound.
